The Spirit rover, part of the Mars Exploration Rover mission, launched from Cape Canaveral on a Boeing Delta II rocket. Solid fuel boosters fell away as the rocket ascended, reflecting exhaust light. Spirit is expected to arrive at Mars in January and will use parachutes and airbags for landing.
