Why do some places on Earth have higher gravity than others? To better understand Earth's surface, slight distance changes between a pair of orbiting GRACE satellites created this map of Earth's gravitational field. High points, colored red, indicate areas where gravity is slightly stronger than usual. Blue areas indicate slightly weaker gravity. Many bumps and valleys on the map are attributable to surface features.
