Orange Sun Simmering
NASA APOD · Ralph Encarnacion
COSMIC MESSAGE
Even a quiet Sun is a busy place. This image, taken in a single color of light called Hydrogen Alpha, records a great amount of detail of our parent star's simmering surface. The gradual darkening towards the Sun's edge, called limb darkening, is caused by increased absorption of relatively cool solar gas. A giant prominence is visible over the edge, while another is seen in silhouette near the image center.
