Pelican Nebula Ionization Front

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Pelican Nebula is a region where the light from young, energetic stars is transforming cold gas into hot gas. This process creates an ionization front, which is the advancing boundary between the two states of gas. Most of these bright stars are just outside the top of the image, but part of their ionization front is visible in the upper right. Along this front, particularly dense filaments of cold gas are visible.
