Astronauts aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis recorded this image of the Mir space station as they approached it for docking during the STS-76 mission. Mir, with its spindly appendages and solar panels, hovered about 350 kilometers above New Zealand's South Island. In March 1996, Atlantis brought astronaut Shannon W. Lucid to Mir for a five-month stay.
