Gamma rays are light so energetic that they can reveal some of the most unusual objects in the cosmos. The EGRET instrument on the Compton Gamma-ray Observatory mapped 271 sources of high-energy gamma rays in the 1990s. While some sources are known, others remain a mystery, hinting at phenomena we have yet to understand.
