Exploring the Antennae

NASA APOD · Bernard Miller
COSMIC MESSAGE

About 60 million light-years away in the constellation Corvus, two large galaxies, NGC 4038 and NGC 4039, are colliding. While stars rarely collide, the galaxies' large clouds of molecular gas and dust frequently do, triggering furious episodes of star formation near the center of the cosmic wreckage. This stunning view spans over 500,000 light-years, revealing the dramatic effects of this ongoing collision.
