Venus and the Chromosphere

NASA APOD · Stefan Seip
COSMIC MESSAGE

Astronomer Stefan Seip captured this detailed image of the Sun during the 2004 Transit of Venus from Stuttgart, Germany. The picture, taken through an H-alpha filter, shows a network of cells and dark filaments against the bright solar disk. It also reveals spicules and prominences along the Sun's limb. The H-alpha filter transmits only red light from hydrogen atoms, emphasizing the solar chromosphere, the atmosphere just above the photosphere.
