Colorful Stars and Clouds near Rho Ophiuchi

The region near Antares and Rho Ophiuchi is a colorful, dusty part of the sky. Fine dust, illuminated by starlight, creates blue reflection nebulae. Gaseous clouds, excited by ultraviolet light from stars, produce reddish emission nebulae. Antares, a red supergiant, lights up the yellow-red clouds in the upper right of the image.
