Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9, known as the 'string of pearls' comet, famously collided with Jupiter. Jupiter's gravity tore the comet's nucleus into pieces in 1992. This composite of Hubble Space Telescope images shows the pieces strung out along the comet's orbital path before their impact with the gas giant.
