M24: A Sagittarius Starscape

NASA APOD · Fred Calvert
COSMIC MESSAGE

This image of M24 shows a rich star field in the plane of our Milky Way Galaxy. Millions of stars, many like our Sun, are visible. Dark dust lanes cut across the image, obscuring even more distant stars. The bright red area on the left is part of the Omega Nebula, M17, a region of hot hydrogen gas where new stars are forming.
