The Great Nebula in Orion

NASA APOD · Stefan Seip
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Great Nebula in Orion, also known as M42, is a region of young stars, hot gas, and dark dust. Visible to the naked eye as a fuzzy patch, long-exposure images reveal its intricate details. The Trapezium, four bright stars at its heart, powers much of the nebula. Many of the filamentary structures are shock waves from fast-moving gas.
