COSMIC MESSAGE
These fantastic, undulating shapes are within M17, the Omega Nebula, a stellar nursery about 5,500 light-years away in Sagittarius. Stellar winds and radiation sculpt the dense, cold gas and dust. These lumpy features, illuminated by stars, might be sites of future star formation themselves. The colors in the surrounding hotter material indicate M17's chemical make-up, with green from hydrogen.
