STEVE, or Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement, is a narrow ribbon of purple and green light in the night sky. It is distinct from the more common aurora borealis, though they can appear together. This phenomenon is caused by hot, fast-moving gases in Earth's ionosphere. A photographer captured this STEVE event over rural Ontario, Canada, alongside the Milky Way.
