Looking Back at an Eclipsed Earth

NASA APOD · CNES
COSMIC MESSAGE

From orbit, an eclipse of the Sun looks like a giant shadow passing over Earth. This image, taken from the Mir space station, shows the Moon's shadow darkening a portion of our planet during the 1999 solar eclipse. Only those directly under the darkest part of the shadow experience a total eclipse. The shadow itself moves at nearly 2,000 kilometers per hour, a dramatic reminder of celestial mechanics.
