Saturn's Iapetus: Moon with a Strange Surface

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

Saturn's moon Iapetus has a strange surface. A distinct ridge crosses the moon near its equator, making it resemble a peach pit. One half of Iapetus is so dark it nearly vanishes when viewed from Earth. Recent observations suggest this darkness is uniformly applied, like a coating on an ancient, cratered surface. The other half of the moon remains relatively bright.
