COSMIC MESSAGE

NGC 6946, the Fireworks Galaxy, is a nearby spiral galaxy undergoing a burst of star formation. Unlike many active spirals, it appears relatively isolated in space, with no obvious cause for this activity. Located 10 million light years away in Cepheus, this face-on spiral spans about 20,000 light years. It is seen through a field of foreground stars from our own Milky Way.
