Oklo: Ancient African Nuclear Reactors

NASA APOD · Robert D. Loss, CEMS
COSMIC MESSAGE

Nearly two billion years ago, natural nuclear reactors operated in Africa. These ancient reactors, like Fossil Reactor 15 pictured here in Oklo, Gabon, formed when uranium oxide, seen as yellowish rock, reached a sufficient density of fissile uranium. No such natural reactors exist today, as the necessary uranium density has since decayed.
