Metal on the Plains of Mars

The Opportunity rover discovered a metallic rock on Mars while traversing Meridiani Planum. The rock, visible in the lower left, is composed mostly of dense iron and nickel. It was found near the rover's jettisoned metallic heat shield, parts of which are visible as the large cone-shaped object and flank piece. This discovery was a surprise during the rover's mission.
