The Ring Nebula, M57, is a planetary nebula that appears as a barrel-shaped cloud of gas from our perspective. This infrared image from the Spitzer Space Telescope shows graceful looping structures extending beyond the familiar central regions. The glowing material does not come from planets, but from the outer layers of a dying star. It is a well-studied example of a star shedding its outer layers.
