When Rainbows Smile

Look near the zenith, directly overhead, when the Sun is low in the sky, and you might see a circumzenithal arc. This ice halo is often called a 'smiling rainbow' due to its upside-down curvature and vivid colors. This example was captured above a palm tree in Ragusa, Sicily. Unlike rainbows, circumzenithal arcs have red on the outside and bend toward the horizon.
