M2-9: Wings of a Butterfly Nebula

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

Stars create their most artistic displays as they die. M2-9, a butterfly planetary nebula, is an example of a low-mass star casting off its outer gaseous envelopes. This expended gas forms an impressive display that fades gradually over thousands of years. M2-9 is 2,100 light-years away and appears in the constellation Ophiuchus.
