The Giant Radio Lobes of Fornax A
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
The giant radio lobes of Fornax A span over a million light-years, originating from the peculiar elliptical galaxy NGC 1316 at their center. Detailed studies suggest NGC 1316 began absorbing a smaller galaxy about 100 million years ago. Gas from this collision has fallen into the central black hole, heating to 10 million degrees. For reasons not fully understood, two opposing, fast-moving jets of particles are ejected, creating these vast radio lobes.
