The Busy Center of the Lagoon Nebula

NASA APOD · Michael Sherick
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Lagoon Nebula, also known as M8, is a bustling star-forming region in Sagittarius. The red glow comes from hydrogen gas energized by intense ultraviolet light from hot, young stars. Dark lanes of dust, created in the atmospheres of older stars, crisscross the nebula. This dynamic environment shows the interplay of gas, dust, and newborn stars.
