NGC 281: The Pacman Nebula

NASA APOD · StarryWonders
COSMIC MESSAGE

NGC 281, also known as the Pacman Nebula, is a busy region of star formation. It contains an open cluster of stars, IC 1590, which formed only a few million years ago. The brightest star in this cluster is a multiple-star system that ionizes the surrounding gas, causing the nebula's red glow. Large lanes of obscuring gas and dust, along with dense knots where new stars may still be forming, are visible in the image. This nebula provides a laboratory for studying stellar birth.
