Barred Spiral Milky Way
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
Recent Spitzer Space Telescope data suggests our Milky Way is a barred spiral galaxy. Looking from within the disk, the true structure is hard to see. However, an infrared survey of 30 million stars reveals a central bar about 27,000 light-years long. This changes our understanding of our home galaxy's shape.
