The asteroid 87 Sylvia, about 380 kilometers wide, is the first known triple asteroid system. Discovered in 1866, it orbits the Sun between Mars and Jupiter. Observations from Paranal Observatory in 2004 revealed its two moonlets, Romulus and Remus. This composite image shows the potato-shaped asteroid with its companions.
