COSMIC MESSAGE
NGC 1309 is a gorgeous spiral galaxy about 100 million light-years distant in the constellation Eridanus. It spans about 30,000 light-years, one-third the size of our Milky Way galaxy. Bluish clusters of young stars and dust lanes trace out its spiral arms, which wind around an older yellowish star population at its core. Observations of its recent supernova and Cepheid stars contribute to our understanding of the universe's expansion.
