The Color of the Moon

NASA APOD · Johannes Schedler (Panther Observatory)
COSMIC MESSAGE

Earth's Moon is usually seen in subtle shades of grey or yellow. This mosaic image, however, exaggerates small color differences. The familiar Sea of Tranquility is the blue area right of center. White lines radiate from the crater Tycho at bottom left, and purplish tones mottle the crater Copernicus left of center. These colors correspond to real differences in the Moon's chemical composition.
