Recurrent Nova RS Ophiuci

NASA APOD · John Chumack
COSMIC MESSAGE

RS Ophiuchi is a recurrent nova in the constellation Ophiuchus. This type of star dramatically brightens, as it did in early 2006, becoming visible to the naked eye for the first time since 1985. Astronomers model these outbursts as interactions between a white dwarf and a companion star, leading to periodic explosions.
