The Expanding Light Echoes of SN 1987A

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

Supernova 1987A exploded almost two decades ago, but its light continues to echo. Light from the original blast bounces off interstellar dust, reflecting back to us. These expanding light echoes were recorded over four years by the Blanco 4-meter telescope in Chile. The image shows the expanding bullseye pattern centered on the supernova.
