Earlier this month, a 2.5-meter infrared telescope was permanently installed in a historic Boeing 747. This is the Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy, or SOFIA. It will fly at altitudes up to 45,000 feet, above 99% of atmospheric water vapor. The telescope mirror is about the size of the Hubble Space Telescope mirror.
