This dramatic image from the SOHO observatory shows a solar prominence, a huge loop of ionized gas suspended above the Sun's surface. These structures are held in place by twisted magnetic fields arching from the solar surface. The EIT experiment on SOHO recorded this event in September 1999, capturing hot plasma escaping into space as the prominence breaks free from its magnetic confinement.
