This cosmic vista shows galaxy M81 on the left, with its blue spiral arms, and M82 on the right, marked by massive gas and dust clouds. These two galaxies have been gravitationally interacting for the past billion years. During each pass, the gravity from one galaxy significantly affects the other. M81's gravity likely created density waves that formed the rich spiral arms of M81, while M81 left M82 with violent star formation.
