Comet Hale-Bopp passed almost directly in front of the Andromeda Galaxy in March 1997. This photograph captures both the Great Comet of 1997 and the Great Galaxy in Andromeda. The bright full moon that night made long exposures challenging for capturing the comet's tails and the galaxy's disk.
