A Tail of Two Hemispheres

NASA APOD · S. Deiries (ESO), M. Fulle (INAF)
COSMIC MESSAGE

By January 19 and 20, Comet McNaught's dust tail stretched about 150 million kilometers, or 1 AU. This required images from both the Southern and Northern Hemispheres to capture its full extent. Two such views, from Cerro Paranal in Chile and the Carnic Alps in Italy, are combined here. The graphic also outlines a perspective view of the comet's orbit and the Sun's relative position.
