Flame Nebula Close-Up

COSMIC MESSAGE
The Flame Nebula, also known as NGC 2024, is not actually on fire. Its reddish color comes from hydrogen atoms glowing at the edge of the giant Orion molecular cloud complex, about 1,500 light-years away. These hydrogen atoms are ionized, stripped of their electrons, and glow as they recombine. In this close-up view, a dark lane of interstellar dust stands out in silhouette against the hydrogen glow.
