Molecular Cloud Barnard 163

NASA APOD · T. Rector
COSMIC MESSAGE

Barnard 163, a molecular cloud in the constellation Cepheus, is so dense that visible light cannot pass through it. This region, about 3,000 light years from Earth, is colder inside than out, creating conditions where gas can clump and form new stars. The red glow in the background suggests active star formation nearby.
