Smooth Sections of Asteroid Itokawa

NASA APOD · ISAS, JAXA
COSMIC MESSAGE

Asteroid Itokawa is not a solid rock, but a loose pile of rubble. The Japanese Hayabusa spacecraft documented its unusual structure and mysterious lack of craters. Scientists are still trying to understand why parts of its surface are so smooth, possibly due to jostling that sorts the asteroid's material.
