Orange Sun Oozing
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
The Sun's surface is a roiling ocean of superheated plasma. This time-lapse movie, taken by the Vacuum Tower Telescope, shows granules, each the size of a continent, constantly forming and dissolving. Sunspots like this one are cooler, darker regions where magnetic fields suppress the flow of heat to the surface. Adaptive optics allowed the telescope to resolve details smaller than 500 kilometers across.
