M64: The Black Eye Galaxy

NASA APOD · Andrea Tamanti
COSMIC MESSAGE

Messier 64, also known as the Black Eye Galaxy, is a bright spiral galaxy about 17 million light-years away in Coma Berenices. Its distinctive 'black eye' comes from enormous obscuring dust clouds, which are sites of active star formation. Observations show M64 is made of two concentric, counter-rotating disks of stars. This unusual structure adds to the galaxy's intrigue.
