Unusual Silica Rich Soil Discovered on Mars

The robotic rover Spirit uncovered unusual, light-colored soil on Mars. It stopped, turned, and returned to inspect the soil, finding it was almost purely silica. Silica is the main ingredient in quartz and glass. Such soil had never been found on Mars before. Spirit sent the images and data back to Earth for analysis. Scientists on Earth say that such soil on Earth is usually created by hot water or steam.
