NASA APOD · Dan & Cindy Duriscoe, FDSC, Lowell Obs., USNO
COSMIC MESSAGE

This sky is protected. Flagstaff, Arizona, became the first International Dark Sky City, enacting the first lighting ordinance 50 years ago. This ordinance restricted searchlight advertisements from sweeping the night skies. The city maintains a lighting code that limits light pollution, allowing astronomers to study the universe and locals to enjoy the night sky.
