A Large Magellanic Cloud Deep Field

NASA APOD · Yuri Beletsky (ESO)
COSMIC MESSAGE

This is the Large Magellanic Cloud, the largest satellite galaxy of our Milky Way. The LMC is classified as a dwarf irregular galaxy due to its normally chaotic appearance. In this deep, wide exposure, the full extent of the LMC becomes visible. With longer exposures, the LMC begins to resemble a barred spiral galaxy. It lies about 180,000 light-years distant towards the constellation Dorado.
