M27: Not A Comet

NASA APOD · Nik Szymanek
COSMIC MESSAGE

Charles Messier cataloged M27, the Dumbbell Nebula, as an object that was definitely not a comet. This planetary nebula is the remains of a star that has shed its outer layers. It appears round and planet-like in a small telescope. M27 is an excellent example of a gaseous emission nebula.
