COSMIC MESSAGE

The Phoenix lander's footpads are about the size of a dinner plate. One is shown here, covered with Martian soil after its successful landing on May 25. The image on the left shows the spacecraft during its descent, captured by the HiRISE camera on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. This was the first image ever of a spacecraft descending to the surface of another planet, taken from 750 kilometers away.
