The Matter of the Bullet Cluster

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Bullet Cluster, 1E 0657-56, is 3.4 billion light-years away. This composite image shows individual galaxies in optical data. The cluster's two clouds of hot, X-ray emitting gas are shown in red. The blue hues show the distribution of dark matter, which represents more mass than the visible galaxies and X-ray gas combined. This provides strong evidence for the existence of dark matter.
