Grand Spiral Galaxy NGC 1232
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
Grand spiral galaxy NGC 1232 is a good example of how much we can see, and how much we cannot. This image, taken by one of the Very Large Telescopes, shows millions of bright stars and dark dust in spiral arms. Bright blue stars in open clusters are sprinkled along the arms, and dark lanes of interstellar dust are between them. The unseen mass, dark matter, is the dominant component of this galaxy.
