NGC 1579: Trifid of the North

NASA APOD · Don Goldman
COSMIC MESSAGE

NGC 1579, nicknamed the Trifid of the North, is a nebula in the constellation Perseus. It lies about 2,100 light-years away and spans 3 light-years. Like the more famous Trifid Nebula, it displays contrasting blue and red colors with dark dust lanes. The blue comes from starlight reflected by dust, but the reddish glow in NGC 1579 is not emission from hydrogen.
