IC 5146: The Cocoon Nebula

NASA APOD · Neil Fleming
COSMIC MESSAGE

Inside the Cocoon Nebula, IC 5146, a new cluster of stars is developing. The nebula is nearly fifteen light-years wide and about four thousand light-years away in the constellation Cygnus. Like other star-forming regions, it glows in red hydrogen gas excited by hot young stars. Blue dust-reflected starlight marks the edge of an otherwise invisible molecular cloud.
